PIGA was officially launched on 22 October 2015 in London, on the sidelines of President Xi Jinping’s State Visit to the UK.
Following the launch in London, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 17 November 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland, between DFID (the former Department for International Development, which has been merged with the UK Foreign Office in September 2020 to form the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) and ITC for the implementation of PIGA Scoping and Design Phase, before the Ambassadors and representatives of Ethiopia, China, Kenya, Mozambique, UK and Zambia.
The main activities of the Scoping and Design Phase included:
During the Scoping and Design Phase, ITC had more than 170 consultations with stakeholders in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zambia to identify common challenges and country-specific needs for technical assistance to attract sustainable foreign investment. As a result, ITC developed the concrete activities for PIGA main phase, which was endorsed by all partners.
Furthermore, in order to initiate the business partnerships with African and Chinese companies, ITC, in close cooperation with CCPIT and CADFund, have organized four events which established a network of 790 African and Chinese companies and initiated USD19.5 million of investment deals under discussion.
As a result, PIGA gained strong buy-in and support from key stakeholders in Ethiopia, China, Kenya, Mozambique the UK and Zambia to start project main phase implementation.
