An increase in plantings, more fields entering maturity and the entry of new companies have contributed to an expected rise of Peruvian blueberry production this year.

According to Sierra Exportadora production of the super fruit in Peru could rise to more than double this year and hit 20.000 metric tons (mt) while last year output stood at 9.600 mt; data showed there were 2.500 hectares dedicated to the crop in 2015 which are expected to reach 3.200 hectares by the end of 2016.

It has to be noticed that most of the blueberry plants this year will be six or seven years old which indicates they’ll have greater production; new medium and large companies are also entering the market.

The fruit is responding increasingly well into diverse parts of the country which now has the capacity to supply the international markets during periods of scarcity mostly between September and November.
